It contains an index to files in the Cognition and Affect Project's Web directory produced
or published in the year 2014. Some of the papers published in this period were produced
earlier and are included in one of the lists for an earlier period. Some older papers
recently digitised may also be included.

Title: How Can We Reduce the Gulf between Artificial and Natural Intelligence?
Original (uncorrected) version online at:

Author: Aaron Sloman
Date Installed: 18 Dec 2014

Where published:
Proceedings of the Second International Workshop on Artificial Intelligence and Cognition (AIC 2014)
Torino, Italy, November 26-27, 2014.

Abstract:

AI and robotics have many impressive successes, yet there remain huge chasms between artificial systems and forms of natural intelligence in humans and other animals. Fashionable "paradigms" offering definitive answers come and go (sometimes reappearing with new labels). Yet no AI or robotic systems come close to modelling or replicating the development from helpless infant over a decade or two to a competent adult. Human and animal developmental trajectories vastly outstrip, in depth and breadth of achievement, products of artificial learning systems, although some AI products demonstrate super-human competences in restricted domains. I'll outline a very long-term multi-disciplinary research programme addressing these and other inadequacies in current AI, cognitive science, robotics, psychology, neuroscience, philosophy of mathematics and philosophy of mind. The project builds on past work by actively seeking gaps in what we already understand, and by looking for very different clues and challenges: the Meta-Morphogenesis project, partly inspired by Turing's work on morphogenesis, outlined here:
http://www.cs.bham.ac.uk/research/projects/cogaff/misc/meta-morphogenesis.html

Keywords:
evolution, information-processing, meta-morphogenesis, Turing, online intelligence, offline intelligence, mathematics

agi-interview-sloman.pdf
Title: Interview: Artificial Intelligence, Natural Intelligence and Evolution
Author: Aaron Sloman, interviewed by Adam A. Ford
Originally transcribed by Dylan Holmes, then extended.

Date Installed here: 22 Mar 2014 (See below for earlier versions).

Date published:
Video recorded 10th December 2012 (Installed on Youtube, January 2013).
Available here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iuH8dC7Snno.
And (reduced .web version (120MB) here (WEBM).

An excellent Draft Transcript (html) was produced by Dylan Holmes (MIT) in August 2013, here:
http://aurellem.org/thoughts/html/sloman.html

Where published:
An extended version of the transcript edited by Aaron Sloman was made available
in September 2013, later reformatted and moved here:
http://www.cs.bham.ac.uk/research/projects/cogaff/misc/transcript-agi-interview.html

The further extended PDF version, above, was prepared for publication as a
chapter in a book edited by Jeremy Wyatt and Dean Petters including papers
prepared for a "birthday" workshop in September 2011, From Animals to
Robots and Back: reflections on hard problems in the study of cognition

http://www.cs.bham.ac.uk/~jlw/symposium_2011/book.html
However the fact that the interview transcript was available under the Creative
Commons "attribution" license made it unacceptable to the publishers (Springer).
So the transcript was not included. However it is freely available here. More
information about the book, published in 2014 is here:
http://www.cs.bham.ac.uk/research/projects/cogaff/fatrab-book.html
